The big things that matter, like full DWG compatibility, keyboard commands, and the familiarity of the screen layout, make it easy for AutoCAD users to transition into the software. I say ‘nearly’ perfect because there are only very small differences between it and the AutoDesk equivalent. So now for the big question: Does it work? And the answer is a definite Yes! I have played around with DraftSight 2D CAD software for nearly a month and have to say that is nearly perfect.

Once the install was complete, it asked me to register the software (this is part of the user agreement for the free version) which thankfully did not ask me for any in-depth personal information. I kept waiting for a bad surprise like a virus or some annoying advertising to all of a sudden take over my screenI (it didn’t, of course). Once the download was finished I did the installation procedure which proved to be quick and straightforward. I went to the DraftSight website and downloaded the software directly from them (a 55.4MB download). So at the very least my engineering buddy had my attention. For me to pick up the latest version of AutoCad LT (the light, 2D only version) it would set me back at least a grand. This brings me to the second thing and that is the no-cost to the DraftSight.

If you ask me, is a ploy to get me to upgrade and as you can see, I have not done so yet – mostly out of spite and the fact that the existing software works just fine for my needs. This is thanks to AutoDesk for making the decision to not have backwards compatibility with the new versions. Now you have to understand that I am still using AutoCAD 2004 currently and I have had quite a tough time of being able to open drawings that have been created in newer versions. When an electrical engineer friend of mine told me about DraftSight 2D CAD Software, I figured it was too good to be true.

  • Wrenches, Drivers, Pliers & Socket Reviews.
  • It is cheap by comparison to really good software, but it is more for hobbyist than serious draftspersons. All in all, I would warn not to take this software too seriously.

(Even today with the big sale.) I do hate it when companies ignore early adapters. Furthermore, I have found enough workarounds, though it pains me to keep deleting extra walls, that I might have even upgraded to TurboCAD Pro if they didn't want to charge $200 for the privilege.

That being said, I paid $130 when v.7 first came out, and I might have been happier if I had paid $50 less. Several of the features do not work as instructed in the manual.Įxported 3D drawings import fairly well into Lightwave for rendering, but TurboCAD's library textures do not export with the drawing, and cannot be accessed outside of TurboCAD. Doors and windows do not propagate when using the 2D to 3D tools, even in the tutorial model. AutoCAD files are hit and miss on import, sometimes scattered all over the drawing after importing.

Undo would invariably insert duplicates of my walls, which I would have to delete time after time. I found this software (TurboCAD Deluxe v7) buggy under Mountain Lion OS.
